Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
PDF Print E-mail

A carbon footprint is a measure of the impact our daily activities have on the environment, particularly in relation to global warming. It measures the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions released into the environment which is produced from burning fossil fuels for heating, electricity and transport etc.

  • Global packaging of bottled waters requires 2.7 million tons of plastic each year
  • Approximately 70% of plastic drink bottles end up in landfill and take up to 1000 years to biodegrade

  • Significant resources are needed to bottle and transport water, especially if that water is imported from overseas
  • According to British research, drinking one litre of bottled water has the same impact on the environment as driving a car for a kilometer

  • The NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change estimates that about 200 milliliters of oil is need to produce just one one-litre bottle
  • Environmental costs include pollution, resource depletion, (oil, gas and coal are used in production process)

  • The extraction of ‘spring water’ can endanger local ground water supplies, in turn effecting the surrounding environment, drying out swamps and other bodies of water, and threatening aquatic plants and animals
  • In addition to the water in bottles, twice as much water is used in the production process. Every litre sold represents three litres of water

  • Bottled water is 240-10,000 times more expensive than tap water- often more than people are willing to pay for petrol!
  • Over 90% of the cost of bottled water is associated with the bottle, lid and label
